Root Planing - Treating Periodontitis at our Greenwich practice
How we attempt to save teeth affected by advanced gum disease.
We have mentioned, a number of times before, the damage that gum disease can cause if left unchecked. Not only can symptoms such as sore gums and bad breath arise, but damage can also be caused to the underlying bone structure which secures your teeth.
By far the best way to prevent this happening is with good home care, along with a six monthly scale and polish procedure, carried out by the hygienist at our Greenwich practice. But when advanced gum disease, or periodontitis does take hold, a treatment known as root planing may be necessary to try to save your teeth.
Root planing
Ignoring periodontitis is not an option. Unless treated, it will cause the bone to become compromised, and eventually your teeth will become wobbly, and quite possibly even fall out. Whilst gingivitis, or early stage gum disease, can be treated in a relatively straightforward manner, periodontitis may require a much more invasive procedure.
Root planing cannot be carried out by the dental hygienist and the treatment must be performed by a suitably qualified dentist or specialist, such as those at the Confidental Clinic. You will almost certainly need a local anaesthetic for this treatment as the teeth have to be cleaned deep down to the roots. This often involves the peeling back of the gums to access these areas.
The hardened bacteria (tartar) is removed from the teeth, right down to the roots, and the bone may also need to be cleaned too. Although this procedure does not guarantee success, it is the only procedure available which will give your gum health a chance to recover.
Aftercare
You are likely to experience additional sensitivity for a few days after the treatment. It is best to avoid very hot or very cold food and drink at this time. You are also likely to experience some soreness and you may need to take your usual pain killing medication.
As mentioned earlier, this procedure does not guarantee to successfully treat your gums and bone health and therefore we strongly recommend that you do not allow gum problems to reach this stage. This is not difficult to do, and good quality brushing, flossing and regular dental hygienist cleaning should be sufficient to keep your gums disease free and healthy.
If you do not currently see a hygienist, we recommend that you make an appointment to see Holly or Leanne at our Greenwich clinic as soon as possible. Why not make your new year resolution to keep your teeth and gums in good condition?
