Replacing Lost Teeth - Looking To The Long Term
The benefits of dental implants over bridges or dentures.
Taking the decision to replace missing teeth is not always a straightforward one. Whilst we may quickly decide to replace missing front teeth that are visible, we may not be as quick when it comes to those teeth that are usually unseen.
Having a full set of teeth though, does make eating much easier and also helps to prevent the cheeks from sinking in, which can leave you looking older than you really are.
Once the decision has been made to replace the teeth, the patient typically has three choices, all of which are available at the Confidental Clinic in Greenwich. Whilst there are pros and cons to each of these, it is our view that dental implants offer the best long term solution for replacing missing teeth.
Dentures and bridges
Both dentures and bridges can be used to replace missing teeth, and some patients do opt for these rather than undergo an implant procedure. Whilst both certainly do offer many benefits, they both require more care and attention when cleaning, and generally are not as long lasting as implants. They are also consider to be generally less secure.
Long term dental implants
Although the implant process can take a little time before it is complete (unless our ‘same day’ procedure is suitable for you); anyone looking for a long term solution to replacing missing teeth would be well advised to consider having dental implants placed.
Once placed and fully integrated with the jawbone, dental implants are, almost certainly, the most comfortable, trouble free and long lasting tooth replacement method currently available.
Whilst you do need to look after dental implants well, this is straightforward and simply means good quality brushing and flossing to remove harmful bacteria and food debris. Regular appointments with the hygienist at our Greenwich dentists surgery are also strongly advised for optimum oral health including the prevention of gum disease. Generally though, once the integration period is complete and the crown attached to the implant, most patients simply forget about them on a day to day basis and enjoy the benefits of the strength and security that they offer.
Providing that you do take good care of your implants throughout their life, they have a much longer life expectancy than other tooth replacement methods. Dentures vary in lifespan and are often damaged due to dropping them whilst cleaning. Facial shape changes due to bone loss also mean that they can become less secure in the mouth. Bridges will also last for some time, depending on their care, but usually no more than ten to fifteen years. Dental implants, on the other hand usually last for at least twenty years and can last for very many more if you take good care of them.
Their longevity means that implants offer an excellent solution for younger adults (children can’t have dental implants due to the fact their faces are still developing). We are always pleased to discuss implants with you, including the procedure itself should you have any concerns about it.
