Why Have Regular Hygiene Appointments?
Even if you are familiar with having regular hygiene appointments, you might be unaware of their importance. In fact, your hygiene appointments play a crucial part in preventing dental problems, helping to maintain strong and healthy gums and ensuring your smile looks its best.
Although we are able to offer a wide range of dental treatments to restore or even replace missing teeth, we’d always far rather prevent dental problems from developing in the first place. Here at the ConfiDental Clinic, we have a dedicated team of dental hygienists who love working with our patients and they will help you gain and maintain optimal dental health. So why should you book a hygiene appointment?
Hygiene Appointments Help Prevent Gum Disease
Gum disease is a real problem and it’s the most common cause of tooth loss in the world. In spite of this we find many people overlook the need for healthy gums and assume if their teeth look fine then there is no need to worry. Healthy gums provide essential support for your teeth and if you have poor gum health then you are more likely to suffer tooth loss. Your regular dental cleaning will clean your teeth far more effectively than your everyday routine of brushing and flossing, helping to keep your gums strong and healthy.
What Is Gum Disease And How Does It Develop?
Gum disease is a bacterial infection caused by a buildup of plaque and you may develop this condition if you miss out certain areas of your teeth when brushing and flossing. For example it can often be difficult to clean all tooth surfaces, particularly right in between your teeth.
The problem with plaque is that it soon hardens into calculus or tartar, which is extremely hard and can only be removed by being scaled or scraped away during your hygiene appointment.
All the time tartar remains in your teeth, it produces toxins that infect your gums. Over time, your gums are likely to begin bleeding and you may notice they have begun to recede or pull away from your teeth.
Without treatment, the infection will eventually destroy the bone holding your teeth in their sockets and your teeth will become loose. This is why it’s so essential to have regular hygiene appointments to remove tartar, removing the source of the infection in your gums.
What to Expect during Your Hygiene Appointment
One of the main reasons to have a hygiene appointment is so your teeth can be professionally cleaned or scaled and polished. This is a non-invasive process that doesn’t require a local anaesthetic as after examining your mouth, our hygienist will gently scrape away all hardened tartar. This tends to build up at your gum line which is the junction where your teeth meet your gums, as well as in between your teeth.
Once all the tartar has been removed, your teeth are carefully polished. One of the nice things about having your teeth polished is that it can remove some slight surface staining so once your treatment is complete you should notice your smile looks a little brighter and fresher than before. At the same time, your breath will be beautifully fresh and your teeth will have that immaculately clean feeling that you only get after having them professionally cleaned.
More than Just a Cleaning
Lots of people think a hygiene appointment is only about cleaning your teeth. While this is important, it is only part of the service we offer during this treatment. Having cleaned your teeth, we are able to identify any areas that could use some improvement.
We Can Work with You to Improve Brushing and Flossing
Even if you regularly brush and floss your teeth, it’s still pretty easy to miss out certain parts of your mouth. Knowing where to pay more attention can help tremendously. We are also only too well aware that people often fail to floss regularly, but it’s so important for gum health. Those contact areas in between your teeth account for around a third of all your tooth surfaces and even if you hate flossing, there are other tools you can try.
Our hygienist can explain how to floss more effectively and easily, or if you prefer how to use interdental brushes. These are tiny Christmas tree shaped brushes that fit in between the teeth and they can be extremely effective, particularly for anybody with limited dexterity.

Legislation passed several years ago means you do not need to see a dentist at the same time as your hygiene appointment.
